A printmaker at heart

Beth works in mixed media combining watercolor, ink, and dye on paper. She uses a process she calls “echo printing,” using the natural chemistry of plants to cast a shadow of their essences onto paper. Each “echo print" is a unique experiment, combining different plants, dyes, and paper.

The results are often unpredictable, giving Beth many different starting points for her paintings. Beth gives each botanical in her echo prints a life of its own with watercolor and ink, creating intricate illustrations that conjure feelings of light and atmosphere.

Beth’s Biography

Beth started “making things,” her mom called it, as a child – elaborate Valentine’s Day cards, embroidered felt, and collages. When she was a teenager, she traded babysitting services for art lessons with local artists, learning how to draw and watercolor.

Beth earned Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in printmaking and photography from the State University of New York at Albany. For more than a decade, Beth ran darkrooms and audio-visual services for seven colleges and universities. As an adjunct professor, she taught the History of Photography, Darkroom Techniques for Black and White Photography, and Hand Coloring Photographs. Through the 1980s and 1990s her prints were accepted into juried art shows in New York, Connecticut, California, and New Mexico. In the 1990s, her hand-colored photographs were displayed in galleries in Sacramento and Davis, California.

Then the internet happened.

Beth fully embraced the digital world, blending her graphic arts sensibilities with her teaching experience to build a 30-year career as an instructional designer. Working across multiple industries, she has designed curricula, websites, presentations, and online courses on a myriad of subjects, including accessibility, user experience, technical writing, public speaking, cyber security, and construction safety.

Still a printmaker at heart, Beth started “making things” again a few years ago. She is constantly experimenting with her processes and refining her painting techniques. Her work is represented at beachKraft Art Gallery in Olney, MD, Eastside Artists’ Gallery in Frederick, MD, and until it closed 12/31/2023, at HorseSpirit Arts Gallery in Savage, MD.

Beth married her high school sweetheart, Dr. Jeff Stinson, and they raised two sons, Patrick and Matthew. They live in Brookeville, Maryland and share their home with their cats Nyx and Rumble.
